Following a significant landslip that severely damaged the north-west corner of this family home, our team was engaged to help restore the property while creating a resilient design for its future.
Working alongside engineers and geotechnical specialists, we developed a solution that carefully rebuilt the damaged portion of the home on its original footprint while introducing a contemporary second-storey addition. The new upper level accommodates a spacious primary suite and ensuite, with an elevated deck that captures sweeping views across Otago Harbour.
Beyond replacing what was lost, the project provided an opportunity to reimagine the home’s functionality. Careful consideration was given to integrating the new structure with the existing roofline, preserving the character of the original home while introducing modern living spaces designed for the years ahead.
The wider recovery also included planning for new rainwater storage, wastewater infrastructure, and outdoor living areas to suit the reshaped landscape created by the landslip.
This project demonstrates that recovery following a natural disaster is about more than rebuilding—it is about creating homes that are stronger, more resilient, and better suited to the future.
